If you’ve been seeing a bit more pink in recent weeks, it’s for good reason.

The color symbolizes Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is annually the month of October.  According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. (NBCF), Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease.

So if you see people wearing pink headbands or wristbands, if a travel soccer team is wearing pink socks with their green uniforms or if your favorite professional football player has a pink towel tucked into his pants, chances are it’s all in support of Breast Cancer.

Physicians First Messages is here to remind you about the seriousness of Breast Cancer, which is a group of cancer cells (malignant tumor) that starts in the cells of the breast.

Incredibly, breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among women. Although rare, breast cancer can also attack men as well.

Although it’s not certain what exactly causes breast cancer, there are risk factors that could increase the possibility of contracting the disease such as drinking alcohol or having a family history of the disease.

The best way to beat the disease is through early detection. Women and men are encouraged to have breast self-exams; get a clinical breast exam by a qualified nurse or doctor or have a mammogram, which is an x-ray that allows a qualified specialist to examine the breast tissue for any suspicious areas.

In addition, there are many ways you can help conquer Breast Cancer through the NBCF, including:

1)   Making a $100 donation, which would help provide a mammagram for a woman in need.
2)   Get involved with family or friends to start or join a fundraiser.
3)   Partner with a nationally-recognized charity.
4)   Volunteer to help educate women about breast cancer.

For the record, NBCF (www.nationalbreastcancer.org ) is a non-profit organization with a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status and a prestigious 4-star rating from Charity Navigator for eleven years.

So please, get your pink gear ready and do your part to help fight this disease. Physicians First Messages believes you can make a difference.

Stop The Procrastinating And Take Charge Of Your Health!

You’ve promised yourself and anyone that will listen that you’re going to get healthier, that your mission is to get fit and trim while shedding some pounds along the way.

But have you started yet? Do you keep telling yourself  ‘tomorrow,’ only to find that you’re still not motivated?

Physicians First Messages is here to remind you exercising doesn’t have to be a daily, two-hour marathon at the local gym.

Walking, for instance, is a perfect way to workout. According to the American Heart Association, walking can benefit you in multiple ways, including:

Picture
Reduce the risk of coronary hearts disease; improve blood pressure and blood sugar levels; improve blood lipid profile; maintain body weight and lower risk of obesity; enhance mental well being; reduce the risk of osteoporosis; reduce the risk of breast and colon cancer and reduce the risk of non-insulin dependent (type 2) diabetes.

Yes, you’ve read that correctly. The simple act of walking can greatly benefit you in several capacities and the best part is, it’s easy … all you need is a good pair of sneakers and a plan.

The best way to get motivated and started is to find a walking partner.

If you’re just beginning, starting slowly is a smart approach, according to Courtenay Schurman, author of The Outdoor Athlete. Schurman suggests to “start walking three times a week at a stroll for 20 minutes.’’

Picture
You should eventually start walking five or more times a week for 30 minutes a session, or 2 1Ž2 to 3 hours per week.

Although some walkers focus on distance and others on time, Schurman says, ‘’ultimately, it’s about speed. If you can walk five miles, but it takes you five hours to do it, it’s not a fit level of work. So use both distance and time as well as heart rate.’’

Bottom line is, the faster you walk, the more calories you’ll burn. If you eat sensibly, walking a half hour after a meal at a relatively brisk pace will erase some calories.

Your health is paramount. Mostly everyone is in a bind for time and can’t exercise daily, but walking just a few times a week can help pave the way to a healthier lifestyle.
