Is this you, just graduated from medical school and landed your first gig job but unpleased with the hours or the pay? Well, let me tell you, you are most definitely not alone. Don’t get me wrong, having a job is of course far better than not having one, just look at the unemployment rate just for the physicians; it is 1 in 6 new physicians can’t find work. But for those who do have a job within medical practices or hospitals have stated that they are unpleased with the hours they are getting or the lack of salary. Well don’t worry so much about it Doctor, there are over multitude of areas you can focus on to make that extra income salary!
Picture
Here are the top 5 opportunity areas you can focus on in making the extra income as a side job.
  • Virtual Consultation is now the new topic trend and a lot of physicians are jumping on board on this. More and more startup companies are coming out with new technology that allows them to leases out their software to doctors who are interested in doing consultation virtually from their own home to their current or new patients. These consultation are an easy way to make an extra income that require no procedure what so ever because you won’t be meeting the patients at all. The best part about it, if you’re located in New York, you can expend your work nationwide and have patients from California or Texas or anywhere call in to you to assess the problem they have. Physicians can even write short term prescriptions if needed and faxed over to the pharmacy. The average price on the market of how much you can make per call goes about $15 to $50 for which can take up as little as to 8 to 15 minutes of your time! Now image that, make your own hours at anytime of the day and make as much money as you want, but just one thing, don’t forget the time zone!

  • Supervising NP and PA is becoming more and more popular now. Why you may ask? Simple, Nurse practitioners and physician assistants are now coming out with their own independent practice that doesn’t have an actual doctor on site. Without realizing it, they will need an actual supervising physician who they can rely on or be assisted on occasional matters in order to prevent any malpractice or lawsuit. Doctors don’t have to spend a majority of their time in the day at the office, only a few hours is usually what it takes and won’t require showing up everyday being that the doctor is on call in case of emergencies. That’s roughly about $14,000 to $32,000 a year as a side job for the extra income, it can wage based on your hours though.

  • Doing House Calls can be great for any physicians, even the ones who are semiretired and looking to make the extra bucks by visiting the patients at their own home for either a company they work for as a side job or for those who don’t have interest in running their own practice. There are over thousands of doctors who are doing house calls and the number is constantly getting higher. If you noticed that hospitals and insurers are pushing more physicians to do home visits as a way to reduce re admissions. This can save the hassle for particularly for hospitals that are in need of bed space. Working for a company, physicians can make between $40 to $70 per visit, but you plan on being a freelancer and doing it for your own side business, you can make as much as $110 per visit depending what the matter of issue with the patient.

  • Nursing Home is a great part time job especially if you want to work more closely to your home and be more local. A lot of nursing homes are hiring part time doctors to assist nurses for the elderly patients. As a physician part time job, you can earn as much as $25,000 a year and as little as $10,000 a year depending how much invested you are on your hours. If you plan on doing as a full time job and your main job, you should apply as a Medical Director for the nursing home; income can range from $70,000 to $120,000 per year.

  • ****Earn While You’re On Your Vacation**** Let me warn you, this won’t be entirely considered as a side job to make extra income but when you decide to go on vacation and you have 2 weeks off you can definitely get paid while you’re at it! Ever thought how you can get a free cruise ship well guess what, here is one way for your Doctor. Cruise ship companies are hiring Doctors to jump on board for whatever the amount of length of the trip is all covered by the company in exchange you putting in a few hours each day as a the ship’s doctor. Did I mention you get paid as well!!! Let me say this again in case you might have misread what I just said because I know I would too. You are getting a free cruise ship while getting paid when you are adventuring the sea. It’s the most pleasant place to work; all the people on the cruise are very easygoing. You will be fully equipped with all the tools and the nursing staff, all you need to do is bring yourself on board and that’s it! Reach out to the major cruise companies and they would gladly assist you with any questions on how to qualify for this position.

Who knows, maybe one of these 5 may eventually become a full time job that you might love doing! It never hurts to make extra money if you have the spare time.

Did You Know That November is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month? Wear Purple And Let's Wage Hope Together!

11/10/2015

Picture
Last month, we asked you to think pink as we gave you some facts about Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

And now we’re asking you to think purple.

If you didn’t know, November is National Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month. And purple, in fact, is the color acknowledging it, just as pink acknowledges Breast Cancer.

Most people aren’t as knowledgeable about pancreatic cancer as they are about breast and prostrate cancer, but it is just as debilitating.

And in most instances, a lot worse if contracted.

Physicians First Messages is here to give you some startling facts about pancreatic cancer and to give you a few tips concerning this horrible disease.

In a nutshell, pancreatic cancer is an aggressive form of cancer that develops in the tissues of the pancreas, which is located in the abdomen behind the lower part of the stomach and aids digestion.

Picture
According to the American Cancer Society, about 48,960 people will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2015 and about 40,560 people will die from it. Pancreatic cancer accounts for about 3 percent of all cancers in the U.S. and accounts for about 7 percent of cancer deaths.

The average lifetime risk of developing pancreatic cancer is about 1 in 67. Although researchers aren’t sure what specifically causes pancreatic cancer, smoking, diabetes, age and family history are leading factors.

The most common problem concerning pancreatic cancer is it’s not easily detected and, in a lot of cases, by the time symptoms emerge and it’s diagnosed, it may have spread to other parts of the body.

Symptoms do include being jaundice (yellowing of the eyes and skin), dark urine, light-colored stools and abdominal pain. It should be noted that the symptoms could very well be caused by a number of other ailments, but if you’ve smoked, have diabetes or have a family history of the disease, it would be best to see a doctor as soon as possible.

Do you want to participate in the cause to conquer pancreatic cancer or possibly do a fundraiser? If so, please visit the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network’s website (www.pancan.org) and hit the ‘Get Involved’ tab.

How Healthy Is Your Smile?

11/6/2015

Picture
In this day and age time is so precious that some of the everyday things we do to keep ourselves healthy go unnoticed.

Think about it: When you’re brushing your teeth, do you even think about what you’re actually doing? Or has it become such a habit, you don’t even remember putting the toothpaste on the brush and actually brushing.

Hey, you’re certainly not alone. But Physicians First Messages is here to remind you that the simple task of brushing your teeth should be taken more seriously for the long-term care of your teeth and gums.

For starters, you should select a brush that’s suitable for you. Make sure you use a brush that’s not too big and that the bristles aren’t too stiff. The American Dental Association recommends using a soft brush regardless if you go electric or manual.

Picture
Second, how many times a day do you brush? And exactly how long do you brush? Michael Sesemann, DDS, the former president of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, says brushing twice a day is recommended and no more than three times because brushing too often could wear down tooth enamel.

In addition, Sesemann says you should brush for at least two minutes. “Most people fall short of the time period,’’ he says. He suggests you divide your mouth into four sections and spend 30 seconds on each.

To make time go faster, says Sesemann,  watch TV. You can even set a timer.

And don’t get too picky on the brand of toothpaste you choose. Some brands claim to specialize in treating certain things, like tartar or whitening, but Sesemann says using the basic, fluoride toothpaste is just fine.

Picture
Finally, always remember to clean your brush when you’re finished so it doesn’t retain germs or old toothpaste. And how old is your brush? The ADA recommends getting a new one every three or four months.

Something as simple as brushing your teeth is very important. Physicians First Messages wants to make sure you’re doing it correctly.

Sincerely,

John Calhoun
