Physicians First Messages wants to thank you for serving our country and protecting our freedom! We honor it today and everyday! Last month, we asked you to think pink as we gave you some facts about Breast Cancer Awareness Month. And now we’re asking you to think purple. If you didn’t know, November is National Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month. And purple, in fact, is the color acknowledging it, just as pink acknowledges Breast Cancer. Most people aren’t as knowledgeable about pancreatic cancer as they are about breast and prostrate cancer, but it is just as debilitating. And in most instances, a lot worse if contracted. Physicians First Messages is here to give you some startling facts about pancreatic cancer and to give you a few tips concerning this horrible disease. In a nutshell, pancreatic cancer is an aggressive form of cancer that develops in the tissues of the pancreas, which is located in the abdomen behind the lower part of the stomach and aids digestion. According to the American Cancer Society, about 48,960 people will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2015 and about 40,560 people will die from it. Pancreatic cancer accounts for about 3 percent of all cancers in the U.S. and accounts for about 7 percent of cancer deaths. The average lifetime risk of developing pancreatic cancer is about 1 in 67. Although researchers aren’t sure what specifically causes pancreatic cancer, smoking, diabetes, age and family history are leading factors. The most common problem concerning pancreatic cancer is it’s not easily detected and, in a lot of cases, by the time symptoms emerge and it’s diagnosed, it may have spread to other parts of the body. Symptoms do include being jaundice (yellowing of the eyes and skin), dark urine, light-colored stools and abdominal pain. It should be noted that the symptoms could very well be caused by a number of other ailments, but if you’ve smoked, have diabetes or have a family history of the disease, it would be best to see a doctor as soon as possible. Do you want to participate in the cause to conquer pancreatic cancer or possibly do a fundraiser? If so, please visit the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network’s website (www.pancan.org) and hit the ‘Get Involved’ tab. In this day and age time is so precious that some of the everyday things we do to keep ourselves healthy go unnoticed. Think about it: When you’re brushing your teeth, do you even think about what you’re actually doing? Or has it become such a habit, you don’t even remember putting the toothpaste on the brush and actually brushing. Hey, you’re certainly not alone. But Physicians First Messages is here to remind you that the simple task of brushing your teeth should be taken more seriously for the long-term care of your teeth and gums. For starters, you should select a brush that’s suitable for you. Make sure you use a brush that’s not too big and that the bristles aren’t too stiff. The American Dental Association recommends using a soft brush regardless if you go electric or manual. Second, how many times a day do you brush? And exactly how long do you brush? Michael Sesemann, DDS, the former president of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, says brushing twice a day is recommended and no more than three times because brushing too often could wear down tooth enamel. In addition, Sesemann says you should brush for at least two minutes. “Most people fall short of the time period,’’ he says. He suggests you divide your mouth into four sections and spend 30 seconds on each. To make time go faster, says Sesemann, watch TV. You can even set a timer. And don’t get too picky on the brand of toothpaste you choose. Some brands claim to specialize in treating certain things, like tartar or whitening, but Sesemann says using the basic, fluoride toothpaste is just fine. Finally, always remember to clean your brush when you’re finished so it doesn’t retain germs or old toothpaste. And how old is your brush? The ADA recommends getting a new one every three or four months.
Something as simple as brushing your teeth is very important. Physicians First Messages wants to make sure you’re doing it correctly.
